lissaswikiWelcome to UC Journalism Program's Feature Writing course

This website is designed to support Professor Elissa Sonnenberg's Feature Writing course at the University of Cincinnati. Here, you'll find everything you need to get an A for this course, plus a whole lot more!

This course is designed to teach you how to write compelling newspaper feature stories, including the extras that all 21st century journalists need to understand. You'll learn how to report with all of your senses, gather critical information about your topics, find and interview sources to get the best and most accurate information, and, who knows, you may have something published by the end of the quarter.

First things first, you'll want to take a look at your syllabus.

Next, think about where you find newspaper features. Are they buried inside ink-stained pages? Lost in Local and Entertainment sections? Think again. Check out these front pages from newspapers around the country, courtesy of the Newseum

(Once you've looked at the front pages, keep scrolling for more course info. And don't forget to check out the sidebar.)

During the quarter, you'll be responsible for reading Lary Bloom's The Writer Within. Some days we'll have a chance to talk about it in class, but other days we'll be too busy with other writing work. In order to get credit for your readings, you'll need to go to the Reading Feedback page to post your answers to the questions I'll pose weekly. I'll review the Reading Feedback page every Friday and give credit to those class members who have responded thoughtfully.

Finally, I expect each of you to create your own wiki page within this site. You will need to create a page named after you based on the "Elissa" template and add a link to it below this paragraph. Take a look at my template page below, and follow my lead. (Note: your wiki page will count as part of your homework; you can post your story ideas and other thoughts on writings and readings throughout the quarter; make entries at least weekly. I will be checking!!!)
